What does a home ferritin test check for?

A ferritin test kit is a medical diagnostic test used to measure the levels of ferritin in a person's blood. Ferritin is a protein found inside cells that stores iron, releasing it when the body needs it. Measuring ferritin levels can help diagnose conditions related to iron metabolism, such as iron deficiency anaemia.

The test kit contains all the necessary components for collecting a blood sample including a lancet, alcohol swab, test cassette, buffer, and instructions for use. The blood sample is collected by a finger prick using the lancet.

This ferritin test kit is a home test to check the iron level in your blood looking for iron deficiency. The test kit will identify if ferritin (iron) level is low.

Common symptoms of iron deficiency include:
  • Tiredness
  • Hair loss
  • Weakness
  • Brittle nails

How to use the ferritin test kit at home

  1. Prepare for the test by washing and drying your hands with lukewarm water.
  2. Ensure the kit reaches room temperature before proceeding.
  3. Open the foil pouch and remove the plastic test cassette.
  4. Remove the cap from the lancet.
  5. Clean the tip of either your middle or ring finger with the provided alcohol pad.
  6. Press the orange end of the lancet against the fingertip; it will retract safely after use.
  7. Keep your hand pointed downward and very gently massage your finger to obtain a blood drop once it's pricked. Important you should not squeeze the finger tip as this can alter the results
  8. Using the dropper, collect the blood without squeezing; it will be absorbed automatically.
  9. Allow the blood to fill the dropper to the indicated line, avoiding air bubbles if possible.
  10. If necessary, gently massage your finger again to produce more blood.
  11. Transfer the collected blood into the sample well of the cassette by squeezing the dropper bulb.
  12. Open the buffer bottle and add 1 drop of buffer solution into the sample well of the cassette.
  13. Start a timer and wait for the coloured lines to appear.
  14. Results should be interpreted at 5 minutes; do not read after 10 minutes.

How to read the results of the ferritin test kit

If the test result shows as 'abnormal' with a single red line visible next to the letter 'C', it signifies low ferritin levels in the blood. This could indicate iron deficiency and might also imply the potential for anaemia. Please be aware that this kit does not assess for excessive iron.

Picked up what I already knew

I wish I knew the actual level it had to be when it detects.
I have been having symptoms of ferritin deficiency and this helps me monitor after a transfusion if my levels are low again and also helps explain the return of my symptoms.
Sadly the gp won’t take the results of Tests they have not performed but this gives me the insight I’m not crazy and there is an issue and I fight forward which they will agree but not treat and then I pay private for help
