Blood sugar monitor and blood sugar test strips

A blood sugar monitor (also called a blood glucose meter) is a small, handheld device used to measure the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It's mainly used by people with diabetes to help them manage their condition.

If you are registered diabetic and eligible to complete a UK VAT exemption certification, for the purchase of a blood glucose meter or blood glucose test strips, please download the declaration form here and and email the completed form to customerservice@accessdiagnostics.co.uk with your Valuemed order number in the subject line.

Here's how a standard blood glucose meter works:

  1. A tiny drop of blood (usually from a finger prick) is placed on a test strip.
  2. The test strip is inserted into the meter.
  3. The device quickly measures the glucose level and gives a digital reading in mmol/L (UK standard) or mg/dL (US standard).

Why it's important:

  • Helps people with diabetes track their blood sugar levels throughout the day.
  • Can show how food, exercise, medication, or stress affects blood sugar.
  • Helps prevent hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar).

Types of blood sugar monitors:

  • Standard glucose monitors – require finger-pricking and test strips.
  • Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) – worn on the body and give real-time readings via a sensor (e.g. Freestyle Libre).
  • Smart monitors – connect to a phone app for tracking trends.
