The Strain on GP surgeries and Services

The Strain on GP Services: Why Access to Primary Care is Still a Struggle in the UK

The ongoing struggle to access primary care in the UK since the pandemic

Anyone trying to access primary care in the UK often ends up feeling frustrated and disappointed due to the ongoing difficulties in securing timely appointments. The complex and sometimes opaque booking systems, long wait times, and limited availability of face-to-face consultations leave many patients feeling like they are navigating an endless maze.

Even when patients manage to secure a telephone consultation, the lack of personal interaction can lead to feelings of disconnect and dissatisfaction, especially for those who require more hands-on care. This sense of frustration is compounded by the inability to get through to receptionists or the feeling that their health concerns are not being taken seriously. As a result, many patients are left with a sense of helplessness, questioning whether their health is truly a priority within a system that seems increasingly difficult to access.

Why are primary care services in the UK difficult to access?

Since the pandemic, GP services in the UK have struggled to return to pre-COVID levels of accessibility, leaving many patients facing significant challenges when trying to access primary care. While some adjustments to remote and digital services have been beneficial, many patients find it increasingly difficult to secure timely appointments, especially for in-person visits.

An over reliance on phone consultations and restricted booking hours has created barriers for patients needing hands-on assessments or more personalised care. As a result, issues that require prompt attention, such as chronic condition management and recurrent infections, often go unaddressed or are deferred to A&E, putting further strain on the healthcare system.

This shortage of accessible GP services has left patients feeling underserved and frustrated, highlighting an urgent need to restore primary care availability to ensure the well-being of patients across the UK. Accessing primary care in the UK can feel very challenging, but there are a few tips that can help patients navigate the system more effectively.

Here are some practical tips for patients who are having difficulty accessing primary care in the UK:

  • Call your GP surgery early in the morning to improve your chances of getting a same-day appointment or visit the surgery and speak face to face with a receptionist.
  • Use online booking systems if your GP surgery offers them – often quicker than calling or visiting.
  • Be clear with reception staff about your symptoms and why you need a face-to-face consultation.
  • Book follow-up appointments in advance if you have an ongoing or chronic condition.
  • Ask about alternative appointment types such as video or telephone consultations if suitable.
  • Make use of local pharmacies for minor ailments and quick health advice.
  • Visit your optician for eye concerns – they are specially trained and equipped with far better tools than GPs for examining eyes and diagnosing problems.
  • Keep notes of your symptoms and when they started to help the GP understand your situation quickly.
  • Stay calm and patient when contacting your GP surgery – keeping a polite, composed approach can often help reception staff assist you more effectively.
  • If you can’t get an appointment or feel you’ve been treated unfairly, ask to speak with the practice manager, submit a written complaint, or use the NHS complaints procedure to ensure your concerns are properly addressed.
  • Contact NHS 111 for urgent help or guidance if you cannot reach your GP.
  • For medical emergencies dial 999 or attend A& E

By combining persistence with clear communication, patients can improve their chances of accessing the care they need.
