FAQ Medical Tests
How do doctors test for diabetes?
The first test a doctor will usually do is a urine test to see if glucose is present in your urine. If glucose (sugar ) is detected in your urine the doctor will then arrange for you to have a fasting blood glucose test done, and you may also need to have a series of blood tests done called a glucose tolerance test.
The doctor may also do a test called a glycosylated haemoglobin test ( HbA1c), which indicates how high the blood glucose levels have been over the previous 2-3 months.
What is a fasting blood glucose?
A fasting blood glucose means that you will be asked not to eat anything for 8-10 hours before the test. You can drink water. The test is usually done first thing in the morning at your GP surgery, so that it means you just miss your breakfast. The test is done on a venous (from a vein) blood sample, which is usually taken from your arm, and is often done by the practice nurse in most surgeries. You should tell the doctor or nurse if your are prone to fainting, as they will then lie you down for the blood test.
What is a normal blood glucose level?
A normal non fasting blood glucose level is below 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL) 2 hours after eating
A normal fasting blood glucose is between 4.0 to 6.0 mmol/L (72 to 108 mg/dL)
